CrazySexyCool: A TLC Story Review

On Monday Oct. 21, 2013 the premiere of the TLC movie finally appeared on VH1. For those who do not know, TLC which stands for T-Boz, Left-Eye, and Chilli, the members of the infamous girl group started in Atlanta, GA. The are the best-selling girl group of all time and have hits such as “What about your friends”, “Creep”, “Waterfalls”, and the well-known “No Scrubs.” The movie captured so much going on in their lives including death in the family, member Chilli dealing with the pains of having an abortion, infidelity in relationships, signing bad contracts, and member T-Boz’s battle with sickle-cell anemia. There was also Left Eye’s battle with alcoholism and the emotional tragedy of her death.

In the movie Keke Palmer portrays Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas, Niatia “Lil Mama” Kirkland portrays Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopez, and Drew Sidora portrays member Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins. Overall, these actresses did a great job in portraying the members lives. However, it was a bit weird seeing the actresses stay young throughout the entire movie .

Furthermore I was able to learn so much about my favorite girl group throughout this movie, along with information that I already knew. I did wish that the movie was longer and/or appeared on HBO so that you could avoid all of the commercials. Some of the songs and music videos looked to be out-of-order as well, but that didn’t compare to all the amazing things the movie had to offer. Lil mama ended up playing Left-Eye very well despite the fans and viewers doubtful opinions. She really connected with the character and it felt as though Lisa Lopez was living through her.  Keke Palmer also did a brilliant job even though I had to warm up to her performance because I felt it was a tad slow. Drew Sidora did a great job as well showing how strong T-Boz had to be during the times where she was sick and had to spend time in the hospital.

This movie made me love the girl group even more and I’m looking forward to what they have in store musically, since they will be coming out with an all new CD sometime in the near future.
